A Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) deals with the rules that apply to different types of organizations. These includes a wide range of organizations, all from, for example, industry or sector associations, trade unions, political parties, to sports clubs, choirs, kennel clubs, free-church communities and various interest groups.
Organizations all have in common that their members, which could be individuals, companies or other legal entities – co-operate for a purpose in common.
Non-profit organizations, economic organizations and community organizations are the most common types. Community organizations are based on special law, e.g. joint ownership organizations, which is an organization of properties operating in an organization, that manages a joint facility.
It is common for larger organizations to be structured as a pyramid. The bottom of the pyramid consists of several clubs, choirs or similar – where individuals are members. The clubs are in turn members of district organizations, which in turn are members of a superior umbrella organization. The umbrella organization is the highest body of the pyramid. The head of the NGO can be international, such as e.g. the Red Cross.
As a board member of an organization, a variety of legal issues may arise that bring you into contact with the law. It may be questions before a general meeting in the organization, uncertainty about how statutes should be interpreted, or questions about how disputes between a member and the organization should be resolved.
